Communication Skills Workshop

The workshop aims to get the participants to explore and experience the process of communication in its totality, thereby learning the ingredients of what is effective and what is not. It also helps participants lose their inhibitions and become more confident in expressing their thoughts and feelings, as well as becoming better team members.

The objective of the workshop is to develop communication skills.  Suggested duration is a minimum of 12 hours divided into 1 hour long sessions each spread over 12 weeks

Workshop Structure
The Communication Skills Workshop sessions will provide participants with an understanding of one or more of the following topics:

Each session has a set of exercises that cater to one or more of the above skill sets, exploring different facets of communication. The session begins with a warm-up, usually connected to the main activity/ activities around the focus area of the session.

Warm-ups

These are usually done to energize the participants, involving as much of the body as possible.

Listening

An important aspect of effective communication is being a good listener. Effective communication requires active listening – hearing and understanding what a person is saying to you including questioning for better clarity. It is not just listening to the words spoken but also understanding the emotions that are being conveyed.

Exercises may include:

Comprehension

Comprehension encompasses understanding and making sense of written / spoken words, image, sounds or action. It is the process of connecting, interpreting, and reflecting on what is known from experience.

Exercises may include:

  • Mime and describe the activity
  • Throw your face

Verbal Communication

Verbal Communication is the ability to articulate one’s thoughts in a clear, concise and direct manner.

Exercises may include:

  • Interview your partner
  • Describe the picture (marketplace)

Non-Verbal Communication

Body language is an important communication tool, it helps in adding feelings and meaning to words. This includes expressions, level of body tension etc.

Exercises may include:

  • Let’s
  • Throw your face

Interpersonal Interactions

Interpersonal Interaction is the ability to work with others in groups and teams. To get comfortable with the other person.

Exercises may include:

  • Interview your partner
  • Marketplace Roleplay – what do you think is happening?

Improvisation

Improvisation is the ability to think on the spot, with spontaneity which often leads to creative actions and solutions. This also helps one to respond better under pressure and not react to a situation.
