Untitled

June 1, 2016

Untitled, a play written by Vijay Padaki and directed by Shashank Purushotham, made waves in Bangalore’s avid theatre community. Shifting between two time-frames that were 20 years apart, the production told the story of an unwanted intersex child, referred to at different points as Indrani or Indranil. Padaki’s script struck a balance between being entertaining and socially observant, with some of its scenes even incorporating improvisation and audience participation.

Beyond the gender spectrum

Untitled explores the various conflicts and issues around an unwanted child. It is a common phenomenon in many cultures to prefer a boy child. The girl child on the other hand is unwanted and often killed. What if the child was neither? This is the very question that Bangalore Little Theatre’s latest production Untitled makes us think about. An original play written by Vijay Padaki, Untitled follows the life of one such child. The play juggles between two timeframes, spanning 20 years, observing the conflicts in a family that had an unwanted child and the present circumstances of the grown-up individual.

Actor Shashank Purushotham’s directorial debut in theatre, Untitled, explores the internal conflicts of a family as their child grows up to being neither a boy nor a girl. The 75-minute play is coming at a time when transgenders and people from across the gender spectrum are getting more acceptance in our society.
